With all the hooks in the Mind Spider’s second full length album, I feel as if I’m a horror movie victim who just wandered into a meat-packing plant. And the second half may even sound like it too. Dirtnap Records is known for their spectacular power pop output, and this release does not disappoint. How could it, with Marked Men’s Mark Ryan and his ensemble cast of Dentonites?
The thin, wobbly, and distorted vocals add an invaluable feeling of impermanence to the entire record. I’m afraid that some day I’ll wake up and they will just be missing from the record... worn away. But, we’re all lucky because when that day comes, we’ll be able to add our own lyrics. The basslines are anthemic, and if side A isn’t your thing, you should call an ambulance immediately. Your family will thank you.
Synths and drum machines have infiltrated the B-side, and are holding the guitars hostage, but you shouldn’t be worried. “Wait for Us” might just be the best song on the record, and it will erase your apprehensions. The song starts to deconstruct itself near the end, finishing in a brilliant and cathartic cacophony of squeal and drone. This would be the perfect end to any normal record, although you may have figured out this record is anything but. I could never describe the final (title) song with my juvenile three chord vocabulary, so you’ll have to hear for yourself.
