Nice Purse
Slumber Girls
Self-Released

Whether you’re cleaning your apartment or throwing together a playlist for this weekend’s house party, Slumber Girls is the type of Energetic album that could suit nearly any occasion. Recorded live over the summer of 2011 at Underwood Recording in Minneapolis, the seven tracks on the album deliver the intensity that you would experience at a Nice Purse performance. The live renderings present the band’s latest work with rawness and power, a distinct shift from their debut Black Medal. Nice Purse, a Minneapolis band that utilizes the many tools on the web to reach the rock community, finds their second release, Slumber Girls, as the focus of Radio K’s Weekly Release Spotlight.

From the first click of the drumsticks to the dwindling whine of a reverb effect, each track is an insight into the energetic madness that fuels a Nice Purse performance. The acoustic sound that cushioned their delivery on Black Medal is largely supplemented by an intensity that drives the listener through the album’s first four cuts in what seems like an instant. Midway through Slumber Girls, “RunTunTun” provides a dreamy escape from the hard charged medley that precedes it.

In general, the bands ability to recognize and utilize the power of tempo change gives movement to a vessel that naturally moves full steam ahead. Vocally, Slumber Girls deviates little from the band’s signature approach. France Camp, with assistance from Elise KaPow and Ian Nygaard, give the band a unique lyrical edge. In part to fine mixing, the vocals become a powerful instrument on the album. Releasing Slumber Girls, Nice Purse trades in an acoustic appeal for reverb and distortion, turning this borderline folk band into a fuckin’ Rock ‘n’ Roll band. The freedom that Nice Purse embodies; a carefree and easy approach to being a band making a live album, is a freedom that anyone who chooses to spend thirty minutes listening to Slumber Girls will also enjoy.

Let’s not forget, Slumber Girls proves, in a high energy and loud way that there are still love songs left to be written. So, if ever you find yourself in search of youthful optimism, grab a copy of Slumber Girls and have a listen. If can’t find one, get your ass to a Nice Purse show.
