The highly anticipated album from Washed Out, Ernest Greene’s project, Within and Without has finally hit shelves after two teaser EPs found a great amount of attention from bloggers (Gorilla vs. Bear, Pitchfork) and web surfers alike. In 2009, the well-known music blog Brooklyn Vegan attempted to book a show during the annual CMJ showcase, but Greene had prior arrangements to marry (reasonable excuse, I’d say). He has since gained even more momentum and respect within the music industry.
Though he has stated there is no relation, his sound reflects the name of the project as well as his laid back, lassiez-fair attitude. Think ‘bedroom music,’ like recreating the sounds of old school indie bands like My Bloody Valentine in the confinement of a 12 foot by 12 foot room with deep red, textured walls and popcorn ceiling. Also worth noting: Hüsker Dü has said he is a fan.
The first five seconds of “Eyes Be Closed” had me hooked at the first measure. Ben Allen, who has produced albums like Animal Collective’s Merriweather Post Pavilion, worked with Greene to develop an easy listening indie album. The third track, “Amor Fati,” feels as if it is riding on the brainwaves of glo-fi bliss-pop. Directly following, “Soft” brings a lighter, upbeat side to the album. Other memorable tracks include”Before” and “You and I.” Truly, Within and Without is fantastic and worthwhile.
This may be only his debut album, but I believe I speak for several when I say we are all looking forward to see what else Ernest Greene has to offer to the indie music world. His debut full-length Within and Without is out now on Sub Pop.
