The Seattle duo of guitarist/singer Joel Schneider and drummer Ethan Jacobsen that make up the band My Goodness proved that they are a force to be reckoned with in their self-titled debut. Schneider (also a member of The Absolute Monarchs) and Jacobsen put forth an album loaded to the brim with bluesy jams. Upon hearing the first couple tracks on My Goodness, their raw, powerful playing style instantly makes them comparable to The Black Keys. Despite this being their first album, My Goodness has already started to uncover their own style. Heavy on the blues with a twist of punk rock, My Goodness has released an album that will surely attract a lot of attention from modern rock enthusiasts.

My Goodness starts strong with “Blackout Baby” and “C’mon Doll”, two aggressive tracks that set the tone for the rest of the album. “Cold Feet Killer” and “Let Me Free” keep the listener’s blood pumping quickly thanks to a solid vocal and guitar effort by Schneider. He continues to keep the high level of energy as they rip through the rest of the songs. In “I’ve Got a Notion” Schneider displays his powerful punk rock voice, and “Better Call Your Mother” showcases Schneider’s quick fingers. The album closes with “Lost in the Soul”, which is drastically different from the rest of the songs. It is a solo serenade performed by Schneider, who shows us a softer side of his musical talents. It was no doubt an interesting way to finish the album, as Ethan Jacobsen’s drumming was notably absent after a dominating performance in the previous nine tracks.

My Goodness’ debut was not ground breaking or out of the ordinary, as they possess very similar characteristics to great bands such as The Black Keys and The White Stripes. Nonetheless, they put out a very good first album. It rocks, commands your attention, and is easy to listen to from front to back. It is highly recommended that you add My Goodness to your list of bands that you should look into this this summer.
