Glasgow natives Mogwai, the currently world touring band formed in the mid-nineties, are about to release their seventh album, cleverly titled Hardcore Will Never Die, But You Will. The album was recorded this past summer at Chem 19 Studios, and will be released on Sub Pop Records.
Mogwai gives a clear established sound, notable for their cosmic sounding instrumentals and incoherent vocals - or lack there of. The almost complete absence of vocals give the listener a chance to sink into Mogwai's dreamy drones of purely instrumental ambiance. "Rano Pano" stands out as one of the more dynamic tracks on the album, along with "Mexican Grand Prix." Both display powerful guitar above a driving rhythm, urging the listener for a second run-through.
Hardcore Will Never Die, But You Will manages to contain a plethora of emotions, including the reflective, somewhat jazzy track "Letters to the Metro." It grabs a hold of the listener more so than their previous works, yet at the same time leaving room for interpretation. It is clear Mogwai knew what they wanted for this album. They had a vision, and they fulfilled it. Every track flows to the next, each giving a taste of what is to come, without being too repetitive.
As much as Mogwai’s material might come off as detached, it’s the defining nuances that leave the listener rewarded in their newest release. Every song adds layers and layers of instrumental goodness, giving solely their melodies to sing along to, instead of lyrics.
