British Sea Power
Valhalla Dancehall
[Rough Trade]
The British are invading again, but this time they're not fighting anyone for attention. Valhalla Dancehall, the fourth official full length from the Sussex and Isle of Skye based 6 piece perfectly blends upbeat anthems that are impossible to ignore with beautifully orchestrated gems that intrigue the listener. Or sometimes both. Tracks like "Georgie Ray" simultaneously soothe the listener while lead singer Yan Scott Wilkinson calmly prods and pulls you into his world. But he's not dragging anyone, just gently guiding them along an intriguing journey.
After ten years of blowing minds with their incredible and eccentric live shows, the psychedelia-tinged rock group continues to enthrall listeners while lead singer Yan Scott Wilkinson sweet talks his way into any heart that they had previously missed on their rambunctious tours. But unlike previous records where every song off the album was a tight-knit, easily accessible bundle, the tracks on Valhalla Dancehall demand to be dug into with multiple listens. Each listen challenges its audience to catch all of the incredibly placed instrumentation while Wilkinson's exploratory and militant lyrics span his past experiences with adornment of the beauty of nature. Which is suitable since the band experienced many existential moments while recording in their farmhouse-turned-studio. From helping a sheep give birth to spending the night about the town with a man who committed suicide after the night was finished, the bandmates each had an experience that impacted the next day's recording session.
Valhalla Dancehall does everything an album should do. It has the catchy, pounding beats to get everyone's toes tapping, as well as the ambient droning guitars that give the album an ethereal feel that only reveal more with each listen. Give it a whirl- you'll end up hoping the British six piece will never stop playing.
