Luke Temple and his cohorts have made a very different sort of album. If you saw them on tour with Grizzly Bear last year, you witnessed a band experimenting with how to make rock cool again, loosely belting out tunes that were dramatically different than their self-titled debut. Where that album was definitely a grower, split into one really beautiful half of music and a second very polarizing side, the new album “Pigeons” fully envelops the listener immediately into its grasp. This is a band more confident and transformed, and lead singer Mr. Temple has managed to hook up with musicians who understand him and his thought process.
This go-around, it’s more of a krautrock experience without the heavy undertones that typically come with that description. The songs are repetitive, but Here We Go Magic has managed to create riffs that seem to never get old, even when repeated for five minutes in the vein of first single “Collector.” It could be the towering horns or vox effects which help dispel the hook towards the end- either way, the result is a shimmering, hell-of-a-catchy tune. And then all calms down into the enchanted “Casual” which has so many instrumental parts going on at once, it’s difficult to tell what exactly is being played despite the volume of the song is substantially quieter than other tracks. There’s a four-tone chime in the background which adds depth to the escalating melody and makes the song melt into a haze. And then there’s “Hibernation,” a song that starts off with such comedic keys and a funky bass line that it might be hard to take seriously. Thirty seconds in though, and those instrumental decisions make a lot of sense with what Here We Go Magic is trying to accomplish: songs that sound different.
So many artists try to make compositions that are overtly unusual and fail in that they might not be very thought-out for a final product. Here We Go Magic throws so many elements into the mix that it’s hard to see a final light, but as always the band propels us into a unique musical realm where we are forced to interact with unfamiliar song elements and notice pretty quickly that we are in good hands. These guys know what they are doing.
