Anni Rossi
Rockwell
[4AD]
Anni Rossi has been performing for a long time. The Minnesota native started her classical training 20 years ago. The fact that she's only 23 makes it that much more impressive. Viola is her weapon of choice, though she's known to be a fairly talented multi-instrumentalist. Hell, she was an elementary school orchestra conductor. Even before the release of her first proper full-length, Rockwell, Rossi had built up a substantial following, touring the U.S. and Europe in various support roles. Her folky, neo-classical stylings are unique but accessible, and for Rockwell she chose the venerable Electrical Audio studios in Chicago and recorded with indie rock grandfather Steve Albini.
You can tell Rossi loves her viola. It's the most prominent instrument on the album. Though other subtle accents are present (including drums, a cello and keyboards), mostly it's just Rossi and her viola. But that's how she's used to performing anyways. "Machine," the first track, is a great example of Rossi's signature vocal style, jumping around from note to note ever so sweetly with the occasional vocal flare. It's almost like she gets too excited or something? "Ecology" is another awesome track, featuring Rossi on a quirky keyboard. With only a dash of the viola, it's the closest she comes to a more indie rock-themed number. And then of course there's "Living in Danger," originally done by those Swedish popsters Ace of Base. If it wasn't pointed out, you probably wouldn't realize that it was a cover. Who knew electro-pop lent itself well to neo-classical arranging? And who knew neo-classical lent itself to such awesome pop numbers that all clock in at under three minutes.
At just 23, Rossi is already a veteran. Her classical training gives her a unique perspective on the current folk scene and her distinct voice and viola-style (who else even plays a viola these days?) gives new life to the female singer-songwriter. And the fact that she's from Minnesota makes it that much more awesome.
